School Entrance Tests

At School Entrance Tests we aim to provide useful best school guides and to take the anxiety out of school entrance tests for students and parents:

  • Providing a vast collection of free private and grammar school entrance exams and educational resources.
  • Creating fun and effective 10-minute tests in the form of quizzes.
  • Providing children with practice exam questions within time restraints. At the same time, they can review the feedback to their answers. This gives children more personal responsibility for their own learning.

We understand how stressful entrance exams can be and therefore want to level the playing field for those who can’t afford tutors / private education.

Latest Ofqual grade update (June 2021)

Two external research teams have been commissioned to survey the pandemic’s impact on Year 11 and Year 13’s learning, from:

  • Students,
  • Teachers,
  • Parents,
  • Carers, and other
  • Stakeholders.

One team is running focus groups, while the other is running online surveys. Here are two of the focus groups’ main findings:

  • A diversity of individual experiences was the main finding.
  • Hence one cannot generalise about the impact of the pandemic on young people in these year groups.

Some 2021 A-Level students came through unscathed, having benefited from:

  • Their teacher’s support;
  • Access to computers; and
  • Excellent broadband.
  • Plus, home study facilities which suited quiet, uninterrupted work.
  • As well as having supportive adults and/or siblings nearby to support them.

All of which allowed them to engage effectively with remote learning.

Successful A-Level courses 2021

There was minimal disrution for those A-Level 2021 courses:

  • Without practical work,
  • Taught by teachers who were quickly able to switch from their normal classroom practice to effective online blended learning.
  • The most successful would also have been comfortable with working on their own and were not too phased by any lack of contact with their peer group or diminished opportunities for away-from-home leisure activities. In some cases their schools and colleges found interesting ways of offering extra-curricular activities remotely.

However, while some students thrived, others:

  • Struggled due to the more independent style of learning required.
  • Well-being suffered.
  • On practical / vocational courses had little work for long periods of time.

In areas of high incidence of COVID-19 the disruption caused by national school and college closures has been compounded by additional absences.

2021 A-Level results day

In fact, some students:

  • Had only a limited number of days at school or college.
  • A year of ill-health.
  • Exclusion from learning for long periods.
  • Suffered impairments to their mental health and general learning disposition requiring months of skilled interventions to correct. Although these students are in a minority.

Other earlier Ofqual updates on 2022 GCSEs

Some preliminary Ofqual plans has been released  concerning the 2022 GCSE exams.

Geography field trips will be cut from 2022 Geography A-levels.

Some critics think that A-Level 2022 pupils are being ‘treated like idiots”.

Ofqual’s May update

The earlier Ofqual update made these key points:

  • A levels and AS levels will be graded by teachers’ judgements using evidence from mocks, tests, coursework, or other work.
  • The teachers’ A-Level grades will be signed off by school, college and department heads before going to the relevant exam board no later than 18 June.
  • A-Level schools, colleges and exam boards will then carry out quality assurance checks.
  • After 2021 A-Level grades are set, all centres will send samples of some students’ work to exam boards, which will carry out further checks at random or where there are concerns.
  • These 2021 GCSE grades and 2021 A-Levels grades arrangements are based on a public consultation involving over 100,000 teachers, students and parents.
