What’s Army Officer graduate entry?

Welcome to our feature on Army Officer graduate entry and Army Officer STEM career options.

The whole process can take up to 6-9 months and between that period one might get a letter or a call. The officer training will be for 6 months from the time of the selection. The joining process is quite flexible and can work as per the timing and circumstance of the applicant.

British Army Officer entry requirents

The British Army is one of the most technologically advanced groups in the world.

  • Between the age group of 17 years and 9 months to 28 years and 11 months of age.
  • For the full army office scholarship program at the age of 12.

Army Officer SJT examples 

Whilst on operations you return to base at 8.30PM at the end of a long day in your Ocelot patrol car. You are tired, dirty and hungry. You are planning to go to the gym, shower and eat when your sergeant informs you that one of your platoons has been injured in a roadside bomb attack. Fortunately, he has now recovered consciousness, is not seriously injured and is in the hospital. You have another combat patrol starting at 6.30 AM the next day. You also need to prepare your kit and be properly rested.

  1. Go to the gym, shower, eat and prepare for tomorrow by getting your kit ready and sleeping as much as possible. As the Soldier is not seriously hurt and has recovered consciousness, ask your sergeant to visit him and to pass on a message that you will visit personally tomorrow.
  2. Visit the Soldier in hospital and then prepare for the next day, before getting some food, a shower and as much sleep as possible before dawn. You can always go to the gym tomorrow.
  3. Go to the gym, shower and eat first. This will make you more presentable and put you in a more positive and buoyant state of mind when you visit the Soldier.
  4. Ask the sergeant to go and visit the Soldier and to pass on a message that you will visit him later that evening.

Soldier SJT examples 

It is 7:30 pm and you want to go out. You have just been told by your Platoon Sergeant that your uniform and bedroom will be inspected first thing tomorrow morning. What would you do?

  1. Go out, but get up early to try to sort out your uniform and bedroom then.
  2. Leave since the inspection is not that important.
  3. Go out, but try to sort out your uniform and bedroom when you get back later this evening.
  4. Do not go out and spend this evening sorting out your uniform and bedroom.

 

Your Platoon has been given a task to complete. However, the team can’t agree on how to do it. 

  1. Listen to all the options, and hope that the team accepts the best one.
  2. Sit back and wait for the rest of the team to agree.
  3. Tell your Platoon Sergeant and get him to sort it out.
  4. Do what you can to convince the team that your plan is the best.

Soldier Aptitude Test Introduction

The British Army uses a wide range of psychometric tests. This is for both the Army Officer Selection Board (the AOSB) and for Soldier Selection.

The British Army Recruit Battery test (the BARB) is used as the first part. Plus, several physical fitness tests.

Your BARB score determines your suitable soldier roles. This is on the basis of cut-off scores. These are the five Army soldier aptitude sub-tests:

Welcome to our Army psychometric test designs from our work with Officer Selction team at AOSB.

We developed numerical reasoning test designs for trainee soldiers and for trainee Officers in the Army.

In our opinion this is one of the largest test development projects of its kind. It involved many strands of Army test design. Firstly, designing over 20 SJTs. Then, two realistic job previews.

Also, we designed three ability tests. Plus, personality questionnaires. Finally, career guidance tests.

Army tests were created by Rob Williams Assessment Ltd. Plus, we designed, several Officer-based situational judgement tests. And a ‘Soldier’ situational judgment test. Plus, Verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning tests for use at ADSC.

Also, we designed a bespoke personality questionnaire for Army Officer ADSC selection centre at Sandhurst.

RAF Officer Graduate Entrance – Key Points

Categories of RAF jobs available include

  • Aircrew (weapon systems officer, RPAS, pilot),

Free ASVAB practice test

The three ranking structures are officers, non-commissioned aircrew, and airmen and airwomen. RAF officers are responsible for carrying out specialist ground support or flying duties.

Interested candidates are required to apply online after deciding a suitable role for themselves. The recruitment process entails seven steps: a RAF aptitude test, health assessment, selection interviews, fitness test, pre-recruit training, acceptance, and final training.

RAF’s apprenticeship is another way of entry into the RAF. Individuals can use this route to reach positions of cyberspace communication, specialist, aircraft technician, survival equipment specialist, and RAF regiment gunner.

Career progression depends on experience; for instance, RAF officers can move up the ranks from pilot officer to flight lieutenant as they grow more adept in their position. In addition, RAF officer can enter into a wide variety of careers after leaving the force depending on training, qualifications, and skills acquired during the service.

Airmen / Airwomen Recruit Test Pass Mark

So once your AFCO has received your application, you will be invited in to sit the AST. The AST is a test compromising these RAF aptitude tests:

  • Verbal Reasoning (15 mins for 20 questions).
  • Numerical Reasoning Part 1 (4 mins for 12 questions).
  • Part 2 (11 mins for 15 questions).
  • Work Rate (4 mins for 20 questions).
  • Spatial Reasoning Part 1 (4 mins for 10 questions).
  • Part 2 (3 mins for 10 questions).
  • Electrical Comprehension (11 mins for 21 questions).
  • Mechanical Comprehension (10 mins for 20 questions).
  • Memory Test Part 1 and Part 2. Each Memory Test has 10 video-based questions.

OFFICERS / AIRCREW / NCO’S

You’ll be invited in for a presentation, and a chance to make sure you have all of the required documents and qualifications needed for your role. The presentation isn’t life-changing but definitely worth paying attention and taking some notes. You won’t be tested on anything at this point. At the end of this presentation, you’ll be given dates of your CBAT testing. This is where things get interesting.

You’ll be invited to RAF Cranwell the day before your testing date. How you get there is up to you, both times I travelled by train, paid for by my AFCO of course. The journey isn’t too bad, was a 4-hour train journey for me via London.

Free RAF aptitude test practice

You must collect your room key and head on to your room to drop off your things. Besides a quick briefing letting you know plans for the morning, the evening time is your own. 

So you’ve woken up at 0600. You’ll head into the OASC centre, and be given a quick brief about what to expect and what you’ll be doing. 

CBAT Testing (for certain RAF Officer roles)

The CBAT tests are NOT fun. They’re not in the slightest bit enjoyable and they will test you. 6 hours of solid testing with only one lunch break, and several 5 minute breaks in-between. I suggest making the most of these breaks and drinking water like a camel. The CBAT is composed of a variety of different tests to assess your mental aptitude.

The majority of these tests you can’t really prepare for as, unfortunately, they’re mostly a “You either have it or don’t” situation.. Memory, spatial awareness etc, but you can gain as much of a boost as you can by practising mental maths, and practising aptitude tests online can never hurt. Oh and one more thing, SPEED, DISTANCE, TIME. You’ll be doing a hell of a lot of SDT questions so I suggest knowing the equations like the back of your hand.

So you’re back home after your ordeal and you’re either happy or not. I’m going to talk about what happens if you’re happy. You’ll be contacted by your AFCO and you’ll be invited in for your filter interview. This will take place at your local AFCO with the NCO. 

YOUR FILTER INTERVIEW

Your interview will consist of two halves. One is about you and the other being about the RAF. The first half is where you sell yourself.

Then the second half is what you can prepare for. They WILL grill you, you really need to prepare for this or you just simply won’t succeed. 
I’m not going to do the research for you, but you’ll need to know about;

Our Top tips

  • In the RAF Verbal Reasoning Test Instructions, you advised of these steps: firstly, you will be presented with an introductory passage. This passage comprises of one to three sentences followed by a number of statements.
  • Read the passage. Then decide which answer option is correct. The real test has twenty questions. You have fifteen minutes. That’s four questions on average every three minutes. We, therefore, advise that when you practice your time yourself. Keep asking yourself, how close am I to achieving this benchmark?
  • Finally, whilst the test is challenging in our opinion you can pass if you practice enough with the right type of RAF aptitude test practice materials.

RAF Training

After your interview, you’ll sit in at your AFCO for around 20 minutes whilst being assessed and reviewed, and then you’ll be told whether you’re successful or not there and then! 

MEDICAL

The medical will change depending on your chosen role, but they all involve:

  • Sent off to a civilian doctor.
  • Have a basic hearing and vision test, followed by a test of lung capacity and heart.
  • Be weighed and measured.
  • Stripped down to your pants and socks and made to squat, walk around on your heels.

OASC 

This is what separates the men from the boys. This will really determine your future in the RAF. You’ll be invited up to RAF Cranwell for 3 days of leadership testing, problem-solving, and planning exercises.

You also take a fitness assessment involving a MSFT and press-ups and sit-ups. I think you have to pass every part of OASC or you’ll be sent home? Someone will have to confirm that for me. What I do know, however, is that you’ll have to sit a Final Interview in front of the OASC board, following the same sort of pattern as your filter, only much much more detailed and grilling.

INTERVIEW

  • Show dedication and willingness to learn.
  • Know why you want to join the RAF. You should have read up on the RAF in advance and have prepared a suitable answer(s).

MEDICAL

The medical will change depending on your chosen role, but they all have the same sort of basis:

  • Be sent off to a civilian doctor.
  • Have a basic hearing and vision test.
  • Followed by a test of lung capacity and heart.
  • Then be weighed and measured.

PRTC

The PRTC is familiarising RAF Officer recruits with RAF Halton. In other words, what would be your phase one training? This is where you will do your second and final fitness test before RTS, only this time it compromises of a bleep test instead of a timed run. A bleep test or ‘shuttle run’ means running in-between two cones 20 meters apart. You must hit each cone before the bleep. The bleeps gradually get closer and closer until you are unable to hit the next cone.

There are also various literacy and numeracy tests. However, these are easier than the Airwoman / Airman Selection Tests. You’ll also do functional skills examinations.

YOUR FINAL RAF INTERVIEW

This is the last hurdle of your application process. You should feel proud to get this far. Do not get complacent though. Since you could still fail at this final hurdle.

The interview lasts around 20 minutes and covers everything you’ve covered in your previous interviews. It’s conducting by your Commanding Officer. As with your previous interview, ensure that you dress to impress).

AFCO = Armed Forces Careers Office. Your local careers office in which you’ll start your journey.

AST = Airmen Selection Test. The test all airmen trades will have to complete in order to progress. Taken at your local AFCO.

CBAT = Computer Based Aptitude Test. A computer-based selection test all Officer/NCO/Aircrew applicants will have to complete in order to progress. Taken at RAF Cranwell.

OASC = Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre. Based at RAF Cranwell, this is your stepping stone for all Officer/Aircrew applications. 

NCO = Non-commissioned officer. Self-explanatory really..

WSOp = Weapons System Operator. An aircrew role in the RAF.

NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Google it, you’ll need to know.

SDT = Speed, Distance, Time. Maths equation.

MSFT = Multi-Stage Fitness Test. Bleep test in simpleton terms.

PRTC = Pre-recruit training course. 3 days in Halton before your basic training. 

RTS Halton = Recruit Training Squadron Halton. Your basic training.

Royal Navy Recruitment Test – Useful Info

The Royal Navy Test (RT) is a battery of four multiple-choice tests covering the following areas: reasoning, verbal ability, numeracy and mechanical comprehension. The test is completed in a paper and pencil format. Each of the Royal Navy Recruit Test’s sub-tests is timed separately by a trained test administrator and the whole thing takes about an hour to complete. Two of the Royal Navy Recruit Test’s sub-tests have a numerical element: the numeracy test and the reasoning test. In the real test, a trained test administrator will read through the instructions for each of the Royal Navy Recruit Test’s sub-tests before you start.

Royal Navy Entry stages

The Royal Navy’s recruitment is a staged process. You must successfully complete one stage before you move on to the next. Successful performance on the Royal Navy Recruit Test means you will go on to have a selection interview.  The pass mark for the Royal Navy Recruit Test varies depending on which branch you are applying to – for example, the most technical branches will require a higher pass mark. What does the Royal Navy Numeracy measure?

The test also requires you to show that you can quickly and accurately use fractions, percentages and basic algebra.

Choose the correct answer from the multiple-choice options shown. In the real test, you will have a separate answer sheet on which to complete your answers. You indicate the correct answer by crossing through that letter. Make sure that you only mark one answer per question. If you decide to change your answer, blacken out your original answer then cross through the letter for your new answer. Focus on working accurately whilst also trying to complete as many questions as you can.

Whilst on operations you return to base at 8.30PM at the end of a long day in your Ocelot patrol car. You are tired, dirty and hungry. You are planning to go to the gym, shower and eat when your sergeant informs you that one of your platoons has been injured in a roadside bomb attack. Fortunately, he has now recovered consciousness, is not seriously injured and is in the hospital. You have another combat patrol starting at 6.30 AM the next day. You also need to prepare your kit and be properly rested.

What would you do?

  • Go to the gym, shower, eat and prepare for tomorrow by getting your kit ready and sleeping as much as possible. As the Soldier is not seriously hurt and has recovered consciousness, ask your sergeant to visit him and to pass on a message that you will visit personally tomorrow.
  • Visit the Soldier in hospital and then prepare for the next day, before getting some food, a shower and as much sleep as possible before dawn. You can always go to the gym tomorrow.
  • Go to the gym, shower and eat first. This will make you more presentable and put you in a more positive and buoyant state of mind when you visit the Soldier.
  • Ask the sergeant to go and visit the Soldier and to pass on a message that you will visit him later that evening.

Your Platoon has been given a task to complete. However, the team can’t agree on how to do it. What would you do?

  • Listen to all the options, and hope that the team accepts the best one.
  • Sit back and wait for the rest of the team to agree.

Our new Army assessment designs were one of the largest psychometric test design projects of its kind. It involved many strands of Army psychometric test design: Army aptitude test design; Army Officer personality test design; and Army career test design. The Army situational test design strand, which Rob Williams Assessment Ltd led, encompassed:

  • Firstly, designing four Army Officer situational judgement tests; one for each Army Officer entry route
  • Secondly, Army soldier situational judgement test designs.
  • Thirdly, two realistic job previews; to preview Army Officer career options; and the multitude of Army soldier career options.

In terms of the new Army aptitude tests, we developed:

Army Aptitude Test Design

Rob Williams Assessment has worked extensively with the British Army. We developed numerical reasoning test designs for trainee soldiers. Also, for trainee Officers in the Army. This large project involved:

  • Designing over 20 SJTs.
  • 2 realistic job previews.
  • 2 ability tests (numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning).

The three primary abilities are key to Army training:

New Army Officer situational judgement test brief

  • Firstly, the target completion time of 20-25 minutes.
  • Secondly, to have approximately 20 items.  
  • Thirdly, to be administered online. Also, to guide candidates, through the provision of feedback, about their likely suitability for Army training / early career stages. Thus prompting consideration of their fit and hence assisting self-selection.
  • Fourthly, to adopt a research-based approach with SMEs to elicit if five distinct instruments were necessary by asking the SMEs to rate how appropriate each scenario was for each Officer entry route.
  • Also, create a core set of common Mainstream Officer scenarios, with specific questions for particular Officer entry routes.

Army Officer verbal reasoning test design

The Army Officer verbal reasoning tests format:

  • Similar formats to those off-the-shelf tests with good psychometric properties.
  • Same format as the MAPP tests at AOSB meaning there is item invariance between the verbal Officer Cognitive Screener tests and MAPP.

This new verbal reasoning test format needed to:

  • Be accessible to a wide range of ability levels and age ranges
  • Simulate ‘officer/management level’ decision-making.
  • Have response options (true, false, cannot tell) assess the ability to comprehend the written information and then determine whether further statements logically follow from this information or not (true or false options) or whether there is insufficient information in the passage to determine whether a statement follows or not (cannot tell).

The new Army Officer numerical reasoning test design that Rob Williams Assessment contributed to had these key psychometric design features:

  • Firstly, is the same as the MAPP tests at AOSB. So, there is item invariance between the numerical Officer Cognitive Screener tests and MAPP.
  • Secondly, is accessible to a wide range of ability levels and age ranges.
  • Thirdly, simulates ‘officer/management level’ numerical requirements.
  • Questions require the application of basic mathematical concepts to answer them and ‘problem-solving’ rather than computational ability, so ensuring validity with the kinds of numerical tasks officers need to perform.

Army Officer Aptitude Tests Intro

  • These assess your numerical, verbal and diagrammatic or spatial reasoning skills.
  • Since these Army Oficer Aptitude tests are presented to you as part of an assessment centre, it is unlikely to be on a pass/fail basis.
  • Each test is presented under exam conditions with a strict time limit.

In 2013/14 , Rob Williams Assessment designed the following Army tests to:

  • Firstly, identify likely suitability for undergoing and successfully completing Army training; and
  • Secondly, to broaden their understanding of the different demands of Army training (and future Army life).

Soldier Practice Test Design

First of all, a situational judgement test. Second,  a realistic job preview for Army soldiers, by keeping the most effective questions based on the trial results analysis. So, to summarise, two tests were created. An Army soldier numeracy skills. Plus, a Soldier literacy skills test.

It is like an assessment centre. Not really a place; rather it is a lengthy process for selecting
people for jobs.

• Army Officer assessment on a number of dimensions – for example, leadership ability,
team working, decision making.
• A range of Army Officer assessment techniques – for example, interviews, psychometric
tests, individual and group exercises.
• A number of high ranking Army Officer assessors to make the selection process is as fair as possible. The decision to hire is made by consensus.
• Several Army Officer candidates being observed together. This makes the selection
process more meaningful. Since you can be assessed both individually and as part of
a team.

Army Situational assessment Design

To provide potential candidates with realistic (face valid) situations they are likely to encounter, and feedback on their responses. Such highly informative feedback aims to improve candidates’ understanding of the demands of Army life.

Thus, better able to make informed judgements about their own suitability. As such, the SJTs are an important early selection filter, both for a candidate’s self-selection and as part of the advice given by Recruiting Officers.

From the start of the item-writing project phase, We emphasised the following points to its item writing teams:

  • A training focus and the assessment of behaviours related to early stages of a person’s Army career; i.e. so-called ‘stick and fit’, or how likely a potential candidate is to successfully complete their training and how well they are likely to adapt to the very early stages of their Army career.
  • In comparison with the optional ALP, the SJT is less transparent, reflecting its higher stakes design application, although the test results may be considered in conjunction when recruiting decisions are made.

Through feedback to both potential applicants and Recruiting Officers, SJTs will provide valuable information that will help Capita manage the risk associated primarily with training, but also with the very early stages of a person’s Army career. the purposes of the SJTs for Westbury’s recruiters are to improve Sandhurst’s training outcomes and the Army’s overall training selection efficiency.

Army Situational Judgement Test Design

Given the SJT’s military context, the test design’s aims were to:

After consideration of the target audience, it was decided   that, Officer candidates would use a response format utilising ‘best’ and ‘worst’ response options. From the four options presented, candidates would be asked to indicate which option is the ‘best’ and which option is the ‘worst’ in relation to the scenario.

A significant advantage of this approach is that it offers a greater potential range of scores to be obtained from the same number of items than if only the ‘right’ or ‘best’ answer were used (Hauenstein et al, 2010). An increased range of scores will aid the statistical analysis of items during the development stage of the SJTs and the eventual reliability of the assessment, as this is linked to the spread of scores obtained from a test.

The use of an ‘effectiveness scale’ was also debated, as this has been shown to    positively affect validity (Scott and Creighton, 2006). With this approach, each response option is individually rated in terms of its potential effectiveness for      successfully addressing the situation.

SJTs have higher validity if respondents are asked what they ‘would do’ as opposed to what they ‘should do’ (Ployhart and Ehrhart, 2003). ‘Would do’ prompts were therefore used because they are more likely      to elicit responses that reflect respondents’ behavioural preferences, rather than their rating of what they consider would be the most appropriate thing to do (regardless of whether they would do this, or act otherwise).

Varying schools of thought exist with regard to response format. Whilst some authors argue that having ‘right’ as well as ‘wrong’ responses can make SJTs too obvious (Hauenstein et al, 2010), only scoring right options truncates the information available for scoring. Thus, we took the a priori decision to score both right and wrong options.

  • For each question, to indicate which action you consider would be best and worst.
  • To be honest about what you think you would do in each situation.
