What’s Army Officer graduate entry?

Welcome to our feature on Army Officer graduate entry and Army Officer STEM career options.

The whole process can take up to 6-9 months and between that period one might get a letter or a call. The officer training will be for 6 months from the time of the selection. The joining process is quite flexible and can work as per the timing and circumstance of the applicant.

  • Between the age group of 17 years and 9 months to 28 years and 11 months of age.
  • For the full army office scholarship program at the age of 12.

I think the awareness and visibility of women in technical roles are hugely exciting. When I first started I couldn’t name any female CDOs or expert role models in the field. Now I get to call some of them friends. 

Female entrepreneur opportunities

My top tip for career success is to be hungry and willing to learn. Technology is evolving and changing rapidly. The people who can get in front of or drive those changes will be the end winners. As a result, entrepreneurship is a key part of my role. I have to actively seek the right business opportunities within this fast-paced ever-changing world. This is for my agency. Plus, for my client in order for us to maintain and grow competitive advantage.

Keep an open mind and always take the opportunities in front of you. You never know where it can lead you. You will have the ability to change fields/roles multiple times in your career. What you like doing/not doing will change as your skillset and experience grows. So don’t get set on one thing. It’s super easy once you have some experience to be able to link it. Or to gain new ones to help you move from one place to the next. The biggest step you can take is the 1st one. So be bold, be brave and experiment until you find the right fit for you.

Data Controller career path

I did an MSc in Computer Science. The first three years of the degree was focused on data structures and data management. The second part on artificial intelligence and neuronal networks. I had many options and was unsure about which career to pursue. I chose computer engineer degree as it was the most unknown to me. It was where my knowledge gap was bigger and because it sounded fancy.

Once I finished I started working in Madrid at Deloitte for Santander Group. I developed data analysis initiatives, where I managed to apply all the programming and data skills I had learnt at university. I guess it was a mix of luck, effort and true enjoyment that kept me going. After a couple of years working in the external audit domain for Santander, I joined EY.  I had the opportunity to launch/create the data quality service.

Biggest Data Controller challenges

  • Firstly, more women in a management position.
  • Secondly, diversity and inclusive policies e.g the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Thirdly, empowering all women and girls. 

Data Controller opportunities for women entrepreneurs  

Having a degree it is definitely not the only path to a successful career. It helps because it gives you the possibility to learn some skills. And a problem-solving mindset that you may need in the future. But the most important part is your willingness to understand problems. To find suitable solutions and your passion to get to the root of the real-life problems. To ask appropriate questions. Plus, to network with different people, connect the dots and find patterns and meaning in the chaos.

No, I would not say but it is still the most exploited one. I would advise young people to consider going to uni as an opportunity rather than an obligatory step for their career. Splitting from the family can be a significant learning point for an adult to discover their real and own aspirations and strengths.

Women entrepreneurs have access to only 2% of total VC funds. This number only can tell you that there are things we need to fight for more. This does not necessarily say that there is discrimination but we need to understand the reasons for this significantly low number. On the other hand, there are funds supporting particularly women entrepreneurs and applying positive discrimination, which could be a great opportunity for a woman with a business idea.

Plus, better products and services that reflect the consumers they serve.

Having on-the-job experience is incredibly valuable. I’m a huge proponent of schemes like apprenticeships. They give you the opportunity to work and study. There are definitely opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the field where I work; in fact, there are opportunities for women entrepreneurs in every field.

Most Careers Services are there to help build student and graduate CVs. A good CV is vital when applying for jobs or internships. Careers Services will offer one to one appointments where advice on how to perfect their cv. Many other useful resources will be available on their website such as templates.

Practice Interviews

Interviews are an extremely daunting prospect of applying for a job and employers will, almost always, require you to participate in one. The Careers Service on campus is there to help you know what to expect at interview. For example, one to ones, video, panel and telephone interviews. Some universities create mock interview situations for their students. Here a Careers Consultant is the interviewer and role play with the student.

They want to recruit bright young graduates and let them know about different opportunities. Employer activity on campus is very common and usually they will give talks or guest lectures, allowing students to partake in Q&A sessions. These events allow students to meet and interact with employers.

Worrying parents

The research showed it can be tough to watch the kids fly the nest, with three in ten parents saying it is one of the hardest things they have ever done.

And it won’t stop them worrying either with 48 percent of parents admitting that they are anxious about what their kids are up to every single day.

A staggering 93 percent agree that it is harder for kids moving into their first home or student halls than it was in their day. But while one in eight parents said seeing their kids go was sad, it gave them and their partner a chance to rekindle their relationship.

Regionally, Leicester parents made the biggest sacrifice for their kids, losing out a massive £953 worth of items. That’s nearly twice as much as Norwich (£499).

What does a mobile app developer do?

A mobile app developer refers to anyone that can design, build/or maintain a mobile app. The two most coveted platforms for these would be IOS and Android, but there are various others. These include Mobile Windows, Blackberry, Symbian, SAP, Kony etc.

A mobile app developer would, therefore, most likely be someone (usually with software development background) who builds and/or maintains an app. Often entrepreneurs or businesses come up with ideas as to what they need and approach mobile app development companies to execute this. This is naturally where the mobile app developer come in. Another alternative would be for someone to come up with their own mobile app idea, build, maintain and market it themselves. This is where the entrepreneurial spirit is essential and would involve a lot of other skills not necessarily related to a mobile app developer.

A mobile app developer would spend most of their day behind their computer. The ‘office environment’ will, however, have a great impact on exactly how they would be spending their days.

  • Principles of secure, stable software design
  • An understanding of the software development process and lifecycle
  • An understanding of some development methodology (Agile, Scrum and so forth) and development platforms or environments
  • Knowledge of two or more programming languages, preferably in-demand ones such as SQL, Java, JavaScript, C# or C++, Python, PHP, Ruby on Rails, or iOS

Other important skills that would be greatly beneficial to a successful career as a mobile app developer

There is no better way for a developer to build skills and knowledge than by doing app development. Also, specialised training and boot camps are highly recommended to get up and running in this field.

To become a mobile app developer you would need skills and knowledge in software development. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, management information systems or similar fields would be very beneficial. Most universities would have options within the field of software development and engineering.

With a degree, it would be easier to approach a company and work as a web app developer to gain access to the industry that way.

Coding bootcamps can be great in kickstarting your career as a developer. These popped up in the past 10 years. They mainly originated because of the high demand for coders and insufficient supply.

These can last anything from a weekend to a few months, depending on the content and the program. At these camps, you are submitted to an intense hands-on program, teaching basic coding skills. These coding skills are however usually only in a specific field of coding while a computer science degree will give you a wider focus. For this reason, some employers will prefer to hire from certain bootcamps, while others would prefer hiring someone with a computer science degree.

Go at it on your own

However, coding bootcamps can be very pricey and you have to make sure you pick the field of coding most in demand.

You can go at this on your own with no qualifications, but you will definitely to make sure you are prepared for hard work. If you are more of a do-it-yourself, go-getter, you can learn the skills to become a mobile app developer on your own.

You can learn to code and buy the necessary tools. If you want to develop on Apple platforms, there are free tools and resources available for beginners. For only $99 per year, you can register as a developer and download the programming tools.

The Android software development kit is free to download. Guides to the different Android app kits can be found on the Google Android development site. You will, however, need to learn the programming language, Java.

Unfortunately, app stores are overflowing with apps of all shapes and sizes. Unlike 10 years ago, if you want to develop a successful app you will have to produce a well-designed one and make sure to hone your marketing skills.

Dev Ops Jobs Salary expectations

Salary expectations for mobile app developers can vary greatly. Glassdoor reports salaries starting at £24 000 pa for entry-level, all the way up to £8 000 monthly (£96 000 pa) for a developer with 8-10 years’ experience. Glassdoor is of the opinion that the average base salary for a mobile developer is £30 200, calculated from 34 salaries as of 3 January 2019. Much higher salaries than these are reported, with IOS developers earning slightly more than Android developers in general. Developers in the United States and Australia seem to earn the most as shown in the below graph. In these countries, app developer income is more than $100 per hour.

  • Firstly, remember that many of the good practices you’re familiar with for face-to-face interviews will still apply. In particular you will need to dress smart and to appear well-groomed. Also, ensure that you maintain eye contact as much as possible with the camera.
  • Secondly, answer the video interview questions as concisely as possible. Make the most efficient use of the time available for each question. There will be a countdown timer, so use it as your guide!
  • FInally, show some consideration for your video interviewing company. If it is a reputable, research-driven video interviewing company (such as HireVue) there will be software analysing your changes in facial expression and body lanaguage. Plus, content analysis softward to analyse your interview answers.

Interviews that are structured around a set of competencies have been shown to be considerably more reliable and predictive of future work performance than the traditionally “unstructured” interview format. In fact competency-based interviews (CBI) have become such an established part of recruitment processes that it is not unusual to encounter candidates who have learnt their best competency examples by heart!

Graduate Interview tips

The panel might ask a candidate to give examples of problems they have tackled and explore their knowledge of problem-solving techniques, but an assessment exercise which allows the candidate to demonstrate this ability in practice is likely to be more informative.

Safer and Fairer

Additional methods of assessment can, therefore:

  1. improve the quality and quantity of information on which to base the selection decision
  2. allow candidates to demonstrate how they meet requirements, rather than relying on self-report and performance at interview.

No perfect method of assessment exists, but the most effective way of predicting job performance is to use a mix of assessment methods and look at the results in an integrated way to build up a picture of the candidate. At the simplest level, this may involve no more than looking at examples of candidate’s past work (e.g. for a post which requires experience in producing clear and concise Committee reports, or information leaflets, publicity materials or instruction manuals). At its most complex and sophisticated it might be a full Assessment Centre using a range of tests and exercises for Senior Management positions.

Graduate Panel Interviews

Panels need to decide if it is appropriate to use additional assessment techniques beyond the interview. Think about the job level, the pool of candidates you need to attract and the criteria you need to assess against. For many jobs, the interview alone will be the most appropriate approach.

  • For many basic level operative and clerical jobs, particularly where there is a constant need to recruit, the best method is to use the Fast Track to Interview approach, where all interested job seekers are automatically invited to interview, helped if necessary to complete a simplified application form and interviewed against the person specification without delay as the only method of assessment.
  • Recruitment initiatives targeting jobs to unemployed residents should not use methods of assessment beyond the interview unless this is strictly essential. The interview should be conducted in an as informal and encouraging way as possible.
  • It is not appropriate to use a battery of assessment techniques for jobs requiring basic level skills. Rather than enhance the outcome, this is more likely to put potential applicants off.
  • Never use assessment tools for their own sake. Selection decisions will only be enhanced if the assessment tool is really needed to get at information that cannot be obtained otherwise.

Getting the Basics Right

Quality Standards and Preparatory Steps

In all cases ensure that:

  • The choice and construction of each assessment method flows from the requirements of the job;
  • The Job description and Person Specification have been reviewed and are up-to-date
  • Tasks in assessment exercises compare with tasks found in the job;
  • Tests and exercises assess requirements for the job, at the right level to do the job
  • When using a newly devised test or exercise, wherever possible pilot it with a group of existing employees in the area of work.
  • Always offer feedback on test and exercise results.

Never just reuse tests or exercises without reviewing their effectiveness in the past.

Graduate Video Interview Tips

Game based learning skills

The popularity of video games has drawn researchers’ attention in the exploration of the possibility of  using video games to enhance knowledge, skills, and other personal attributes.

The idea of using games for serious purposes other than entertainment is called game-based learning. Advocates of game-based learning argue that well-designed video games represent solid learning principles. A fair amount of research shows that game-based learning is at least as effective as nongame conditions, such as class- room contexts.

In addition, when game-based assessment is designed following a principled design framework such as evidence-centered design or cognitive design system, the assessment is likely to have high validity and reliability.

Game-based assessment is essentially performance-based assessment. Tasks that require students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by working through a task. Rather than a simple test of one’s ability to recall or recognize information, or supply self-reported information, performance-based assessment provides students with the opportunity to show their understanding and apply knowledge in meaningful settings.

Part II

Scholars generally support the use of performance-based assessment to measure and support twenty-first-century skills over conventional types of assessment such as multiple-choice questions or filling in the blanks.

Good games can provide an engaging and authentic environment designed to keep practice meaningful and personally relevant. With simulated visualization, authentic problem solving, and instant feedback, computer games can afford a realistic framework for experimentation.

Part III

Another key feature of well-designed games that can enhance learning and motivation is adaptivity related to providing appropriate and adaptive levels of challenge. Gee has argued that the secret of a good game is not its D graphics and other bells and whistles, but its underlying architecture in which each level dances around the outer limits of the player’s abilities, seeking at every point to be hard enough to be just doable.

Similarly, psychologists (e.g., Vygotsky) have long argued that the best instruction hovers at the boundary of a student’s competence. Flow is another name for this phenomenon. It is a construct first proposed by Csikszentmihalyi to describe an optimal experiential state that involves complete immersion in an activity and a deep sense of enjoyment. Flow represents full engagement, which is crucial for deep learning.

Part IV

The vast number of data points that are now included in traditional, gamified and game-based assessments gives you more information to interpret, so you can make more accurate decisions about your candidates. Also, because the way each of us processes information and responds when we’re assessed is unique, it’s now possible to create a ‘psychometric fingerprint’ for each candidate. Knowing not only what score a candidate achieved but how they went about it can help you to prevent cheating and spot potential.
