      Marketing Science Career

Inspiring answers on Verity Gill’s marketing science career at Facebook.

WID Verity Gill, Marketing Science Director for Agencies, EMEA @Facebook (1)

      Marketing Science career path

I studied econometrics at Uni and really loved it and was luckily pretty good at it. Then I went into banking and gravitated towards technical analysis (looking at stock movements and trying to identify patterns to predict future moves). However, finance didn’t float my boat at all. I got chatting to a friend who was in media. She said they were always looking for smart people in effectiveness. Subsequently, I interviewed for Mindshare and got the job. I loved that job then had kids, built a social network site, gravitated to digital effectiveness and here I am!

Marketing science career challenges (for women)

I cannot wait for the work environment to be more actively designed around us. If you look around at the modern office, they are really great, but I doubt we would have designed them like this. More natural influence, more tactile furniture, different temperatures, places to meditate, places to talk to your kids on facetime etc…

Is a degree the only path to a successful career?

Definitely not. If you love something you can learn about it in your own way. Sometimes the best way to learn is not to be taught

Yes, thank goodness. We are the only thing holding ourselves back in the world of entrepreneurship.

Try everything, don’t be afraid and stop worrying about failure… the worst that can happen is that you learn something!

Green Jobs written in grass effect

      Green Jobs

Demand for green jobs in the UK has risen by nearly a third (32%) in the last 12 months. According to research by LinkedIn, the UK saw a 12% increase in the number of sustainability professionals last year. This is higher than the global average of 7.5% as the impact of climate change becomes more of a priority for businesses around the world.

      Our Green Jobs Search

Climate change remains a defining issue of our time and while COVID-19 is all-encompassing at this moment, it’s reassuring to see that the UK is well placed to lead on sustainability with the world-class talent to take us forward.

European cities are leading the green jobs increase with the UK having the fifth highest concentration of sustainability professionals in the world.

          Green Jobs revolution

The Tories initially promised to cut greenhouse gas emissions to “net-zero” by 2050. Their November 2020 announcement went much farther.

The Government aims to create 10,000’s of new green jobs. In part these new green jobs are for those unfortunate people who have been made redundant because of the pandemic.

This green economy stimulus package could also help to “reskill” workers. Reskilling them for green jobs in areas such as insulation upgrades, offshore wind and carbon capture.

These measures go significantly beyond the Conservative’s manifesto commitment to create two million jobs in clean energy within the next decade.

The book is easy to read and covers preparation, practical examples and an overview of the usual proceedings on test day. The recaps at the end of every chapter are great for a quick overview before test day. Definitely a worthwhile investment and sure to put you at ease before an assessment of this kind.

Most leadership teams/boards I see in our industry are particularly vanilla. We need more diversity in these teams – more diversity in thinking, leading to better, high performing, successful teams.

Keeping up with your university exam revision

Welcome to our 2020 university exam revision tips.

              Revision Tips

Effective assessments cannot be rushed, so start before the exam date. Try to start reading early every day because the brain is fresh and easier to work. Starting in the afternoon means that you may be up late and try to re-evaluate everything. It is better to have a common overhaul, and you want to start and finish each day around the same time.

              Use goal-setting theory

Setting goals is vital. This enables you to both schedule and track your progress.

Plan your most effective University exam revision timetable

You might think it’s a waste of time to plan. However, in the long run, you save time because you don’t have to decide what you’re looking for each day.

It’s also important to set realistic timescales. Schedule your study time by seeing which times of the day work best for you. With 5 days available per week, aim for at least 3-4 hours University exam revision revision each day.

              University exam revision

              Take regular breaks

Regular study breaks are vital for University exam revision. When the brain is tired and you are prone to losing attention, learning can no longer reverse or have an effect means you are not really working effectively. Instead, the goal is 30-45 minutes, with a short break and, ideally, over 4 hours of study per day. This way, you will revise a more efficient explosion without saving a few hours of alertness to address multiple subjects.

How do you own learn best?

Try other methods such as watching documents or videos, listening to podcasts, working in groups, using other coloured paper for each set of revisions notes, moving to a new learning area or and creating revision posters,.

              Keep positive.

              Stay positive and calm.

Examples of STEM data careers paths

                  Interview excerpts with STEM Ambassador

After two years (and a lot of fun) designing buildings for my architecture degree two things became clear.

                  1. I was good at passing exams.
                  2. I was less disciplined in terms of studio work.

However, in myself, I knew I struggled with justifying my design choices. I reconsidered maths – in particular using it to help businesses perform – the practical application was very important to me. So I embarked on Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research.

                  10. Would you say having a degree is the only path to a successful career?

Absolutely not.  Degrees were a good way to get a grounding in a specialist subject in my time… I have definitely seen a shift towards different paths from what I began with.

Would you say there are opportunities for women entrepreneurs in your career?

Yes most definitely.  I think the amount of skill-sharing/learning you see online makes it far easier to (become) an entrepreneur.

                  11. What advice would you give your younger self and school leavers today?

I learnt that there is more than enough time to explore what you love…

                  And above all –

Often in life the best is yet to come.

If you do know what you want to do – congratulations but I always just did what I found interesting, in my GCSEs, A-levels and through my degrees before my working life really started. There was never a grand plan but a search for the next puzzle worth figuring out.

Biggest challenges to a data careers

Diversity is recognised as important, that single simple statement is so powerful and it’s crazy to think that it wasn’t always the case.

Absolutely not, it doesn’t fit everyone and nor should it. We aren’t all the same and we should play to our strengths. Some of us are really hands-on or passionately creative or something else that doesn’t want to do more formal education.

In our oipinion, the best way to prepare for any Exam is to believe that your children can do it. Secondly, to manage their expectations openly. They should see the chance to get into a school as a possibility. And not a necessity. So if they don’t get in, it Is because the school was not right for them. Finance Manager:

The best way to understand finance manager’s role is to look at it from a different perspective; As an instrument, as a management function, as a research and processing field (McMahon, 1995). Financing is the value of money, convertible funds, or currency. The financial management function refers to the Finance and Accounting Department, which must be responsible for managing the organizations financial and accounting tasks. Finance is a field of research as a subject. As process, the financing refers to the monetary value identification of the economic entity, estimation, procurement, distribution, performance and distribution of extensive activities (Kadam, 2012).

In this way, the Company’s Chief Financial Officer plays an important role in the company’s objectives, policies and financial success. The tasks of the Finance Manager include::

                              Top Data careers interview

Here are excerpts from our interview with Leyre Murillo Villar. Leyre is a Women in Data  Ambassador 2020. Leyre works as a CDO Data Controller.

                              Data Controller career path

I did an MSc in Computer Science. The first three years of the degree was focused on data structures and data management. The second part on artificial intelligence and neuronal networks. I had many options and was unsure about which career to pursue. I chose computer engineer degree as it was the most unknown to me. It was where my knowledge gap was bigger and because it sounded fancy.

Once I finished I started working in Madrid at Deloitte for Santander Group. I developed data analysis initiatives, where I managed to apply all the programming and data skills I had learnt at university. I guess it was a mix of luck, effort and true enjoyment that kept me going. After a couple of years working in the external audit domain for Santander, I joined EY.  I had the opportunity to launch/create the data quality service.

                              Biggest Data Controller challenges

                              • Firstly, more women in a management position.
                              • Secondly, diversity and inclusive policies e.g the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals.
                              • Thirdly, empowering all women and girls.

Data Controller opportunities for women entrepreneurs

Having a degree it is definitely not the only path to a successful career. It helps because it gives you the possibility to learn some skills. And a problem-solving mindset that you may need in the future. But the most important part is your willingness to understand problems. To find suitable solutions and your passion to get to the root of the real-life problems. To ask appropriate questions. Plus, to network with different people, connect the dots and find patterns and meaning in the chaos.

Data Controller Jobs and Career Guide

Welcome to our Data Controller Jobs and Career Guide.

                                      Data Controller career path

I did an MSc in Computer Science. The first three years of the degree was focused on data structures and data management. The second part on artificial intelligence and neuronal networks. I had many options and was unsure about which career to pursue. I chose computer engineer degree as it was the most unknown to me, where my knowledge gap was bigger and because it sounded fancy.

                                      Data Controller jobs

Having a degree it is definitely not the only path to a successful career. It helps because it gives you the possibility to learn some skills and problem-solving mindset that you may need in the future. But the most important part is your willingness to understand problems and find suitable solutions, your passion to get to the root of the real-life problems and ask appropriate questions and your ability to network with different people, connect the dots and find patterns and meaning in the chaos.

                                      Data Controller Career Opportunities

Once I finished I started working in Madrid at Deloitte for Santander Group, developing data analysis initiatives. After a couple of years working in the external audit domain for Santander, I joined EY.  There I was given the opportunity to launch/create the data quality service. And I realised that not only I was good at it but also everything made sense in my head and I was able to make the best use of my creativity and my curious mindset.

                                      Data Controller Challenges

We are seeing more women in a management position, leading to a diverse blend of skills and leadership styles. Also more diversity and inclusive policies are now being developed. For example, the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, among them the Goal 5: that Gender Equality. This states that talks about how to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

I was led to become an engineer by my teachers mostly. I was not very well informed when I made this choice. Luckily, I then discovered that engineering is my thing and really enjoyed this. I had the opportunity to combine my enthusiasm in history and economics with engineering during my postgrad and studied science and technology policies as masters.

                                          Biggest machine learning career challenges

Learning is now not restricted in classrooms. Anywhere or on any device, as long as you are keen to improve your knowledge, there is a platform and mostly free that can help you to do that. In my perspective, this is groundbreaking and will def change our world moving forward. Human capital is still the most important part of our job.

No, I would not say but it is still the most exploited one. I would advise young people to consider going to uni as an opportunity rather than an obligatory step for their career. Splitting from the family can be a significant learning point for an adult to discover their real and own aspirations and strengths.

Women entrepreneurs have access to only 2% of total VC funds. This number only can tell you that there are things we need to fight for more. This does not necessarily say that there is discrimination but we need to understand the reasons for this significantly low number. On the other hand, there are funds supporting particularly women entrepreneurs and applying positive discrimination, which could be a great opportunity for a woman with a business idea.
