Education

Motivation

On this site, we have the main focus on private school and grammar school entrance tests. However, we also like to provide general information regarding assessment and school entrance. Children’s well being is of utmost importance to us.

However, we cover all matters relating to education. With a special interest in current affairs, assessment, STEM careers and career guidance.

Verbal reasoning tests are one of the most common types of school entrance tests.

Aptitude tests refer to tests assessing reasoning ability. In education these include:

Firstly, 11 plus verbal reasoning tests.
Secondly, Non-verbal Reasoning tests
Thirdly, 11 plus Maths tests.
And also, Quantitative Reasoning tests.
Plus, Cognitive Ability Tests.
And also, 11 plus Abstract Reasoning tests.
Then finally, Spatial Reasoning tests.

Practice aptitude test design links are the best way to improve your aptitude assessment results. At the end of each short aptitude test quiz you will be provided with you score and the correct answers. If necessary there will also be a method attached.

ISEE Practice Tests

Welcome to our ISEE practice tests & Common Entrance Exam.

Students from 5th to 9th grade can appear for this test but the level of tests will be different depending on the grades they are appearing for. The 9th grade admission tests are the toughest ones.

Try our ISEE test practice.

Questions asked on the ISEE:

The test will be based on verbal reasoning, comprehension, quantitative reasoning, mathematical knowledge, etc. These kinds of topics will be common in all levels of tests. There will be very minor differences between the different grade level tests. The comprehension reading part lasts for not more than 25 minutes, followed by the mathematics achievement, which lasts for 30 minutes. Along with two to three other portions of the test, the total duration become 2hrs 50 minutes.

Preparation for the ISEE:

The preparation of the test can be done online and offline both. The ISEE preparation guide needs to be monitored first. There are online portals where practice test sessions can be attended and this is one of the best ways to prepare for the test. Most of the study material can be availed from the internet. There is nothing much to learn before appearing as most of it will be based on past experience.

Try our ISEE test practice.

Our ISEE Tips

One of the most common reasons behind falling short for this test is the anxiety. This is one of the worst things and when it kicks in, situations get really ugly. The more the students practice on the online test portals, the better they will be able to perform on the day of the actual examination.

London Private Sixth Forms

In England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some Common Wealth countries a Sixth Form refers to the last 1-3 years of schooling. This is usually between the ages of 16 and 18. A Sixth Form education is to prepare for A-level exams, at the end of Year 13. Although most Sixth Forms form part of a Secondary school, they can also be independent. Independent Sixth Forms Colleges imitate learning in a more informal manner, closer to University.

You may find that Sixth Form colleges are different from those attached to secondary schools on the following:

  • No uniform
  • Meeting new people as learners all come from different schools
  • More independence preparing learners for after school
  • A wider range of subjects including BTEC and vocational courses

For most schools, Sixth Form, therefore, consists of Year 12 (Lower Sixth) and Year 13 (Upper Sixth).

Although most English Private Secondary schools have a Sixth Form as part of the school, these can also be independent.

Although Sixth Form is not compulsory in England, children of that age need to still be in formal education. There are therefore a few choices after writing GCSE’s at the end of Year 11:

  • Attend Sixth Form in preparation of University/Academic qualification
  • Vocational training
  • Advanced Apprenticeship

Below you will find a list of Independent Sixth Forms. Some of these are part of Secondary Schools while others are independent.

[ultimate-faqs]

How much 11 plus practice is needed?

During term time, most tutors will hold a weekly session of between 60 to 90 minutes with additional homework set each week. During the holidays the tutor may also recommend extra sessions. This is especially important in the summer period leading up to September’s 11 Plus exams.

The key is that the additional work required for the 11 Plus needs to be manageable for your child. Because if it’s not, then this will simply add to their stress levels before the examinations which are counter-productive.

How to keep your child calm

  • If your child is worried about taking their 11 plus exam, we advise:
  • Reassuring them they will be fine and just to do their best.
  • Avoiding ‘burn out’ caused by creating so much stress around the 11 plus exam.
  • Do not leave any anxiety issues, such as those described above, to get better on their own without any invention. Since it can lead to a situation in which your child can’t focus at all on their practice – or even the final 11 plus exam.

Our 11 plus papers summary

While the beginning of Year 5 is usually a good time for your child to start tuition, it goes without saying you should begin the groundwork much earlier.

This is necessary for two reasons. Firstly, so you can fully identify the weaknesses your child may have when it comes to taking the 11 Plus. Secondly, you will need a bit of time in order to find the right tutor.

Inevitably, the best tutors can be booked up many years in advance, so the earlier you start to look for one the better your options will be.

When choosing a tutor, you need to ask about their qualifications and their success rate in getting children into Grammar schools. You also need to see how they get on with your child and how much they charge for their time.

Best advice really is to ‘Keep calm and Carry On’

If your child is worried about taking their 11 plus exam, we advise:

  • Avoiding ‘burn out’ caused by creating so much stress around the 11 plus exam.

Hi, I have a question about the allocation of marks within the test. I am currently working with an EAL boy, who has very strong results in non-verbal reasoning and maths. However, his limited English is impacting on the standards he is achieving in comprehension and verbal reasoning. He is currently scoring close to 100% in the one aspect and only around 50% in the verbal. Is any consideration of this made when looking at scores? His parents are concerned that he will be able to achieve the desired standard at this point.

11 plus test papers – 11 plus practice papers – 11 plus exam papers

Answer

I recommend contacting the school/s where they are interested in applying to and ask what their policies on this are. I would also try and find out if the pupil can do a verbal reasoning assessment in their own language to provide a more accurate/relevant picture of the child’s potential.

The problem is that the pupil will be entering a system where English is the language of tuition. Therefore the assessment is not necessarily aimed at looking at the child’s innate potential (which would in any case not really be assessed in a practised format test), but rather the child’s potential of academic success within that school or system. Which sadly would be English based.
The best advice for improving (English) verbal reasoning is to speak and read In English. Even watching English movies will help. Word games like Scrabble or websites like www.lumosity.com with different kinds of games for practice.

When should you start your 11+ prep?

11 Plus Exam Papers’ Tutoring Tips

One of the big issues is when to start 11 Plus preparation. Beginning tuition in years 2 or 3 is almost certainly too early. However, leaving it until the end of year 5 is probably too late. What’s more, it can create more stress for the child too, the later you leave it.

Generally speaking, we advise no more than 12 months of tuition for the Eleven Plus. So, starting at the beginning of Year 5 is probably a good time. At the very latest January of year 5 for exams taking place in September of year 6.

 Our 11 Plus Exam Papers

Address 11 plus learning gaps

Obviously deciding when to start tutoring depends largely on the abilities of the individual child. He or she may only need a few hours of exam practice. In this case, a few months may be adequate.

However, if there are much greater gaps in their learning, then you may require several months of regular weekly tuition.

In regions where the 11 plus covers curriculum subjects, such as English and Maths, it is sometimes necessary to use a subject-specific tutor from an earlier age. This is to address known weaknesses in these subjects.

For example, many 10-year old boys struggle with English papers where they have to write their own composition ‘from the heart’. So getting a tutor who can help stimulate your child’s creative writing is probably a good idea.

Conversely, some children struggle with core areas of mathematics, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, so a dedicated Maths tutor may be needed.

The good news is that all 11 Plus Preparation to get into grammar school will also help your child’s schoolwork. In particular, core subjects such as Maths and English. The bad news, of course, is that tuition doesn’t come cheap!

In theory, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning papers are designed to test a child’s innate ability and are more difficult to prepare for. However, the reality is that children do need to familiarise themselves with the types of questions in these papers to do well.

This is particularly true of test papers from GL Assessment which still remains the biggest supplier to local authorities and schools. There are

For example, the Kent Test Familiarisation Booklet, which you can find here, features some sample questions. Similarly, there are free 11 Plus test papers here.

Top 11 Plus Tips for Busy Parents

Increasingly popular with local authorities, Durham’s CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) entrance tests are much newer and more difficult to prepare for.

According to its website “CEM aims to reduce any disadvantage created between children who are tutored for tests and those who are not.” It continues: “Our assessments are designed to enable all children to demonstrate their academic potential without the need for excessive preparation.”

Nevertheless, the CEM entrance tests cover the same subject areas (Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning) as the GL Assessment tests and the standardized pass-mark is the same (121).

What are the key CEM 11 Plus differences

The key difference is that in the CEM exams Verbal Reasoning and English are grouped together. CEM exams are also divided into separately timed sections. Hence, it’s important that children learn how to manage their time correctly as it’s not possible to return to sections once completed.

Also known as the Transfer Test, it consisted only of Verbal Reasoning for many years. However, the test now includes English and Maths.

There are 2 bodies managing the Transfer Test: The Association Of Quality Education (AQE) set 3 standard format papers while the Post Primary Transfer Consortium (PPTC) set 2 multiple choice papers.

The test is usually taken on a Saturday in November / December at one of Northern Ireland’s Grammar Schools.

More information on each grammar school exam can be found on the website of the grammar school, AQE or PPTC.
