STEM Head of Solutions

Anthea Oon (DeSyllas), one of the Women in Data Ambassadors on her life and working as Head of Solutions at Money Dashboard.

Head of Solutions Career path

I knew what I didn’t want to do but not what I did! I joined a graduate programme at L’Oreal straight from university and whilst working in market research there I was presented to by a company called dunnhumby. The rest, as they say, is history.

Head of Solutions Changes and Challenges

Flexible working – enabling women to better manage their hectic home lives alongside the demands of work.

Having a degree is not the only way but it definitely still helps. There is definitely space for women entrepreneurs and we need more.

Most leadership teams/boards I see in our industry are particularly vanilla. We need more diversity in these teams – more diversity in thinking, leading to better, high performing, successful teams.

Head of Solutions Advice

Do what you love and feel passionate about – don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. There are too many people out there who hate what they do which is a travesty, as work takes up such a big part of your life. Focus on something that you’re happy to get out of bed for!

Brilliant book. Read it from cover to cover. Don’t skip the chapters. I know it can seem patronising, the way he breaks it down, but I’d recommend reading it through.

Very clear layout to follow, questions advance over the chapters and it sets a steady pace. This book helped me immensely to get all the practice I needed within 3 days.

A really useful book

CLock with quote on our rush to return to norma while working from home with children

Expert advice on working from home with children

joint statement by the main teachers’ unions said that “we cannot home-school the nation’s children”. Many schools have now provided learning packs and have since started some form of online learning. Thereby relying on parents being able to supervise their children.

But what is more important, say educationalists, is maintaining a degree of normality. So, let’s try to give ourselves a bit of a break. Children learn best when they feel safe and loved. How can we create a safe secure environment for our children if we are constantly trying to follow the 9-5 model?

Here are some things I would suggest we focus on

Prioritising our children

Not only do they learn better in a safe, happy and secure environment, they are also looking up to us to gauge our reactions to events. There is a lot of uncertainty in the air.

We’ll just have to accept the following

  • Sometimes they are going to be on their screens

Try and talk to them about what they see and hear out there. It is important to give them some autonomy. Let them decide some of their days and give them options on what to do when mom and/or dad are busy.

There is no right and wrong here and leaving this list open on the device that they use most often, could help them find something slightly more educational at least sometimes. There are even sites where they can create a movie or do some ‘Creative Coding’.

Free Online Resources for Learning at Home During COVID-19.

From live webcams at African waterholes to virtual tours of famous museums like the Louvre and Machu Picchu.

Creating a new future for working from home with children.
  • Structure and routine are important

There is safety in structure, especially for children. I’m not saying plan every 5 minutes of the day, but have a structure to your day where you can. A bedtime routine can be such a good time to bond with your child.

  • Let your child be bored

It’s actually good for them. Let them take a holiday from it all sometimes. Switch off phones and TV’s and see what they find to keep themselves busy with. After all the moaning has subsided of course.

Look after yourself

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Work just can’t have your full attention at the drop of a hat anymore. In trying to keep things ‘normal’.

They just aren’t. It doesn’t mean you have to freak out or go into a panic of any kind, it just simply means we cannot deny this. Countries have shut their borders and you have been asked to stay home for the foreseeable future, the whole family, mind you and only virtual contact with those outside your family. It’s pretty real and it’s all quite out there.

So get into the bath with a glass of wine or watch reruns of old rugby games if that is what you need to do, but take the time. Or make pancakes with the kids when you can.

Set realistic expectations. You are not just working from home, you are working from home with children.

Set realistic goals

Don’t expect to reach previously set deadlines. We should really be looking at ways to give ourselves a chance to integrate this new way of life. We are not merely working from home, we are working from home with children and there is this strange ‘apocalyptic’ feel to it all.

So, get things done in a way that works for everyone. There is not a one-size-fits-all way we are going to get through this. The important thing here is that we make a conscious effort to make

Challenge Yourself

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying throw everything out the window and become a couch potato.

There are so many ways to up the challenge a bit once this new routine settles in. The amount of (FREE!) resources out there are insane. Looking at it all right now might be a bit overwhelming, but you can always come back to this. You have time.

Rooseveldt quote for life tip
Working from Home with Children

Maintain Contact

Maintain virtual contact. Yes, Zoom meetings are great, but it’s still a meeting. Video calls are a safe and easy way to keep in contact with friends and family. Being connected to others is crucial both for our well-being and survival. Whether it’s messages or calls, it doesn’t really matter. Isolation has its own demons, perspectives of those that think similarly to you might be good for you.

These are unprecedented times, but we have the opportunity to create a better way of life through this all. Let’s be conscious in the process instead of trying to pretend it’s life as usual.

In the rush to return to normal, use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth rushing back to.

Our Data Careers guide

In 2018, Caroline was named as one of the Top Women in Data & Technology. Prior to founding Carruthers and Jackson, Caroline worked across multiple industries in strategic data and IT roles, most recently as Group Director of Data at Lowell Group and as the first Chief Data Officer for Network Rail.

Current data career path or were you led to it?

If you do know what you want to do – congratulations but I always just did what I found interesting, in my GCSEs, A-levels and through my degrees before my working life really started. There was never a grand plan but a search for the next puzzle worth figuring out.

Biggest challenges to a data careers

Diversity is recognised as important, that single simple statement is so powerful and it’s crazy to think that it wasn’t always the case.

Absolutely not, it doesn’t fit everyone and nor should it. We aren’t all the same and we should play to our strengths. Some of us are really hands-on or passionately creative or something else that doesn’t want to do more formal education.

Happiness is a choice, so be happy. There will always be challenges, hard days and times you think you want to crawl into a hole but you can’t, they don’t last and they make you appreciate all the good stuff you get to do and above all have fun and don’t take things so seriously.

School Entrance Tests advice for parents

In our oipinion, the best way to prepare for any Exam is to believe that your children can do it. Secondly, to manage their expectations openly. They should see the chance to get into a school as a possibility. And not a necessity. So if they don’t get in, it Is because the school was not right for them. Promote a growth mindset by avoiding the belief that your child has failed somehow.

CRM Jobs

Welcome to CRM jobs and the latest in our Women in Data Ambassadors series.

CRM career path

I started temping on an IT support helpdesk when I left university and stayed for five years!. I was leading a project to roll out new equipment, which was struggling because we were getting conflicting schedule data from several sources, none of which were accurate. For a workaround, I taught myself Access and built my first database, and I found I’d enjoyed going that much more than my actual job! So I went back to college and retrained in software engineering, and afterwards, I was fortunate to land a role on the data team at the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). I love working in the not for profit sector and I’ve remained in that field ever since

CRM changes and challenges

There is a growing awareness of flexible working, which has benefits for everyone regardless of gender but does help enormously for parents and carers who want to continue to progress in our careers. As a parent I’ve benefited from shared parental leave which meant my husband and I could take equal time off for maternity leave. Recognising that both parents can be a carer and a breadwinner is one step toward gender equality, but there are still more steps to go!

CRM career opportunities

Well, my degree was in geography, and while that did involve some elements of maths and statistics, I can’t honestly say I draw on it every day! The skills I use in my role are almost exclusively self-taught, and I have to continually update them as the technology landscape changes (this year I’ve been learning Power BI and Python). Being curious and adaptable are the key skills that have enabled me to progress.

Data jobs interview – Data Strategy Manager

Welcome to our Belle Cartwright interview. Belle is one of the Women in Data Ambassadors. Belle works as a Senior Data & Audience Strategy Manager.

      Data career challenges

I think the awareness and visibility of women in technical roles are hugely exciting. When I first started I couldn’t name any female CDOs or expert role models in the field. Now I get to call some of them friends.

      Female entrepreneur opportunities

My top tip for career success is to be hungry and willing to learn. Technology is evolving and changing rapidly. The people who can get in front of or drive those changes will be the end winners. As a result, entrepreneurship is a key part of my role. I have to actively seek the right business opportunities within this fast-paced ever-changing world. This is for my agency. Plus, for my client in order for us to maintain and grow competitive advantage.

        Our top Data careers advice

Keep an open mind and always take the opportunities in front of you. You never know where it can lead you. You will have the ability to change fields/roles multiple times in your career. What you like doing/not doing will change as your skillset and experience grows. So don’t get set on one thing. It’s super easy once you have some experience to be able to link it. Or to gain new ones to help you move from one place to the next. The biggest step you can take is the 1st one. So be bold, be brave and experiment until you find the right fit for you.

Here are excerpts from our interview with Leyre Murillo Villar. Leyre is a Women in Data  Ambassador 2020. Leyre works as a CDO Data Controller.

      Data Controller career path

I did an MSc in Computer Science. The first three years of the degree was focused on data structures and data management. The second part on artificial intelligence and neuronal networks. I had many options and was unsure about which career to pursue. I chose computer engineer degree as it was the most unknown to me. It was where my knowledge gap was bigger and because it sounded fancy.

Once I finished I started working in Madrid at Deloitte for Santander Group. I developed data analysis initiatives, where I managed to apply all the programming and data skills I had learnt at university. I guess it was a mix of luck, effort and true enjoyment that kept me going. After a couple of years working in the external audit domain for Santander, I joined EY.  I had the opportunity to launch/create the data quality service.

      Biggest Data Controller challenges

      • Firstly, more women in a management position.
      • Secondly, diversity and inclusive policies e.g the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals.
      • Thirdly, empowering all women and girls.

Data Controller opportunities for women entrepreneurs

Having a degree it is definitely not the only path to a successful career. It helps because it gives you the possibility to learn some skills. And a problem-solving mindset that you may need in the future. But the most important part is your willingness to understand problems. To find suitable solutions and your passion to get to the root of the real-life problems. To ask appropriate questions. Plus, to network with different people, connect the dots and find patterns and meaning in the chaos.

      Top data careers advice

Ask questions, understand the why and the how. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, learn from them. Fully embrace chaos and changes, as many challenges will come, use them as a testing environment to try new things. Think where you are today, where you want to be and build your path to get there.

I was led to become an engineer by my teachers mostly. I was not very well informed when I made this choice. Luckily, I then discovered that engineering is my thing and really enjoyed this. I had the opportunity to combine my enthusiasm in history and economics with engineering during my postgrad and studied science and technology policies as masters.

                  Biggest machine learning career challenges

Learning is now not restricted in classrooms. Anywhere or on any device, as long as you are keen to improve your knowledge, there is a platform and mostly free that can help you to do that. In my perspective, this is groundbreaking and will def change our world moving forward. Human capital is still the most important part of our job.

No, I would not say but it is still the most exploited one. I would advise young people to consider going to uni as an opportunity rather than an obligatory step for their career. Splitting from the family can be a significant learning point for an adult to discover their real and own aspirations and strengths.

Women entrepreneurs have access to only 2% of total VC funds. This number only can tell you that there are things we need to fight for more. This does not necessarily say that there is discrimination but we need to understand the reasons for this significantly low number. On the other hand, there are funds supporting particularly women entrepreneurs and applying positive discrimination, which could be a great opportunity for a woman with a business idea.

Strangely I never chose explicitly to work in data. I slowly moved towards it by discovering what key parts of the roles I was in  I really enjoyed. Naturally, my analytical traits drew me towards roles which required a lot of analysis, problem-solving and translating data into communications, plans and strategies.

                      Challenges

There’s an incredible movement right now to get a lot of women into tech. Right from a young age which is inspiring. However to make this a long-term success, the women currently in this field need to be advocates for ensuring that the world the next generation enter is fit to help them thrive and keep them in STEM careers. For me, I am excited to see there’s a growing movement towards flexible working, a good work-life blend and open conversations about the existing gender pay-gap and data bias that exists currently.

                      Analytics Jobs Opportunities

Absolutely not. For me personally, my degree is not in a STEM subject. I read History at the University of Birmingham and then moved into a more technical career path through experience, self-learning and post-graduate certifications. Honestly, there are many paths towards a successful career and honestly, no one path is the right one to take. A career is a successful one in my opinion if it makes you happy, keeps you fulfilled and promotes positive change in yourself and for those around you.

If you need specialist knowledge in a field and a degree is a requirement for your desired occupation, obviously it is clear that the most direct path to this would be to undertake the degree. However if not, apprenticeships, work experience and personal development are all other great ways to build the knowledge and skills needed to have a successful and fulfilling career.

Never be afraid to trust your own instincts, even if the choice seems scary, impossible or difficult at the time. Quite often, the biggest challenges lead to the greatest opportunities and rewards so never be afraid to push yourself to do something if it feels right. Also, remain true to yourself, learn from those who inspire you, and the true value of success is how happy you feel – not how much stuff or status you have.

                      Analytics careers path

I applied for several roles in accountancy but was rejected. I decided to start from scratch and think about what I enjoyed. Econometrics was my favourite subject at University, so I started exploring that route. I found an agency leveraging econometrics to inform marketing capital allocation and media planning decisions. I applied and got the job. Then 2 weeks later I moved to London to start my career in data and analytics.

                      Challenges and Changes

                      • Shift in working environments to being more flexible
                      • Increasing parity of maternity and paternity leave, although more work needs to be done here.
                      • Many successful people who chose not to graduate from University, for example, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Richard Branson… pursuing their passion… led to highly successful companies.

                      Analytics Opportunities

Definitely, gender is the key diversity group which affects data and analytics, with males outnumbering females 4 to 1. The disruption caused by women entrepreneurs would help to shake up this field… Bringing diversity at senior levels and by serving as role models for those considering to enter the industry… To encourage those to stay and grow their career in data and analytics.

                      Analytics advice

Let go of being perfect! I spent far too much time thinking, planning… Even worrying about the future, when what matters is really now… As things generally change that will affect your initial decisions and thoughts anyway. Don’t worry so much and go with the flow.

Innovation Lead example of an Innovation Career Path

On paper, my career journey looks quite erratic… But the theme running through all of my choices has been experimentation. I like to try new things that haven’t been done before. Whether that was literally experimenting in a laboratory. Or trialling different data sets to see which has the most impact.

                          Innovation Career Opportunities

Having more women, more people of colour, more people from different backgrounds, isn’t charity. Companies aren’t pushing diversity & inclusion initiatives just because it’s the right thing to do. They’re doing it because it makes good financial sense. I’m excited that this is a big focus for organisations everywhere. It will lead to lots more opportunities for a broader range of people. Plus, better products and services that reflect the consumers they serve.

                          Qualifications for Innovation Careers

Having on-the-job experience is incredibly valuable. I’m a huge proponent of schemes like apprenticeships. They give you the opportunity to work and study. There are definitely opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the field where I work; in fact, there are opportunities for women entrepreneurs in every field.

                          Challenges

I’m excited that the value that diversity (of all kinds) is being recognised as having a major impact on the bottom line for businesses. Having more women, more people of colour, more people from different backgrounds, isn’t charity; companies aren’t pushing diversity & inclusion initiatives just because it’s the right thing to do (although it certainly is), they’re doing it because it makes good financial sense. I’m excited that this is a big focus for organisations everywhere and think it will lead to lots more opportunities for a broader range of people, as well as better products and services that reflect the consumers they serve.

                                          Audit manager jobs London

What do audit manager jobs involve?

Firstly, auditing is the process of analysing procedures and processes. All this, to make sure they are legal, working and accurate. Audit management, therefore, involves supervising this process and making sure that audit directives are followed. It’s key to simplify and organise the workflow and processes involved in an audit.

Become an audit manager, meeting around table

There are different kinds of audits, internal and external, involving different procedures and processes.

Audit managers, therefore, seem to fall into three categories, internal, government and external.

The internal audit is set up within the business. It is there to prevent fraud in the business. An internal audit will have a look at risk management, governance and internal control processes to make sure they run effectively. The internal audit process is run by management directives. This is the main difference between the external audit and internal audit. The internal audit managers will, therefore, present their audit to the external audit managers for review.  External audits are run by an external company, unrelated to the business.

The audit manager therefore not only supervises the audit process but also has to show strong leadership skills and put processes in place. They have to communicate well with their team of auditors, management and external auditors when necessary.
