Green Jobs written in grass effect

Green Jobs

Demand for green jobs in the UK has risen by nearly a third (32%) in the last 12 months. According to research by LinkedIn, the UK saw a 12% increase in the number of sustainability professionals last year. This is higher than the global average of 7.5% as the impact of climate change becomes more of a priority for businesses around the world.

Our Green Jobs Search

Climate change remains a defining issue of our time and while COVID-19 is all-encompassing at this moment, it’s reassuring to see that the UK is well placed to lead on sustainability with the world-class talent to take us forward.

European cities are leading the green jobs increase with the UK having the fifth highest concentration of sustainability professionals in the world.

Green Jobs revolution

The Tories initially promised to cut greenhouse gas emissions to “net-zero” by 2050. Their November 2020 announcement went much farther.

The Government aims to create 10,000’s of new green jobs. In part these new green jobs are for those unfortunate people who have been made redundant because of the pandemic.

This green economy stimulus package could also help to “reskill” workers. Reskilling them for green jobs in areas such as insulation upgrades, offshore wind and carbon capture.

These measures go significantly beyond the Conservative’s manifesto commitment to create two million jobs in clean energy within the next decade.

Flexible working – enabling women to better manage their hectic home lives alongside the demands of work.

Having a degree is not the only way but it definitely still helps. There is definitely space for women entrepreneurs and we need more.

Most leadership teams/boards I see in our industry are particularly vanilla. We need more diversity in these teams – more diversity in thinking, leading to better, high performing, successful teams.

Head of Solutions Advice

Do what you love and feel passionate about – don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. There are too many people out there who hate what they do which is a travesty, as work takes up such a big part of your life. Focus on something that you’re happy to get out of bed for!

Data jobs interview – Data Strategy Manager

Welcome to our Belle Cartwright interview. Belle is one of the Women in Data Ambassadors. Belle works as a Senior Data & Audience Strategy Manager.

Data career challenges

I think the awareness and visibility of women in technical roles are hugely exciting. When I first started I couldn’t name any female CDOs or expert role models in the field. Now I get to call some of them friends.

Female entrepreneur opportunities

My top tip for career success is to be hungry and willing to learn. Technology is evolving and changing rapidly. The people who can get in front of or drive those changes will be the end winners. As a result, entrepreneurship is a key part of my role. I have to actively seek the right business opportunities within this fast-paced ever-changing world. This is for my agency. Plus, for my client in order for us to maintain and grow competitive advantage.

  Our top Data careers advice

Keep an open mind and always take the opportunities in front of you. You never know where it can lead you. You will have the ability to change fields/roles multiple times in your career. What you like doing/not doing will change as your skillset and experience grows. So don’t get set on one thing. It’s super easy once you have some experience to be able to link it. Or to gain new ones to help you move from one place to the next. The biggest step you can take is the 1st one. So be bold, be brave and experiment until you find the right fit for you.

Here are excerpts from our interview with Leyre Murillo Villar. Leyre is a Women in Data  Ambassador 2020. Leyre works as a CDO Data Controller.

Data Controller career path

I did an MSc in Computer Science. The first three years of the degree was focused on data structures and data management. The second part on artificial intelligence and neuronal networks. I had many options and was unsure about which career to pursue. I chose computer engineer degree as it was the most unknown to me. It was where my knowledge gap was bigger and because it sounded fancy.

Once I finished I started working in Madrid at Deloitte for Santander Group. I developed data analysis initiatives, where I managed to apply all the programming and data skills I had learnt at university. I guess it was a mix of luck, effort and true enjoyment that kept me going. After a couple of years working in the external audit domain for Santander, I joined EY.  I had the opportunity to launch/create the data quality service.

Biggest Data Controller challenges

  • Firstly, more women in a management position.
  • Secondly, diversity and inclusive policies e.g the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Thirdly, empowering all women and girls.

Data Controller opportunities for women entrepreneurs

Having a degree it is definitely not the only path to a successful career. It helps because it gives you the possibility to learn some skills. And a problem-solving mindset that you may need in the future. But the most important part is your willingness to understand problems. To find suitable solutions and your passion to get to the root of the real-life problems. To ask appropriate questions. Plus, to network with different people, connect the dots and find patterns and meaning in the chaos.

Top data careers advice

Ask questions, understand the why and the how. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, learn from them. Fully embrace chaos and changes, as many challenges will come, use them as a testing environment to try new things. Think where you are today, where you want to be and build your path to get there.

We are seeing more women in a management position, leading to a diverse blend of skills and leadership styles. Also more diversity and inclusive policies are now being developed. For example, the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, among them the Goal 5: that Gender Equality. This states that talks about how to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

I was led to become an engineer by my teachers mostly. I was not very well informed when I made this choice. Luckily, I then discovered that engineering is my thing and really enjoyed this. I had the opportunity to combine my enthusiasm in history and economics with engineering during my postgrad and studied science and technology policies as masters.

Biggest machine learning career challenges

Learning is now not restricted in classrooms. Anywhere or on any device, as long as you are keen to improve your knowledge, there is a platform and mostly free that can help you to do that. In my perspective, this is groundbreaking and will def change our world moving forward. Human capital is still the most important part of our job.

No, I would not say but it is still the most exploited one. I would advise young people to consider going to uni as an opportunity rather than an obligatory step for their career. Splitting from the family can be a significant learning point for an adult to discover their real and own aspirations and strengths.

Women entrepreneurs have access to only 2% of total VC funds. This number only can tell you that there are things we need to fight for more. This does not necessarily say that there is discrimination but we need to understand the reasons for this significantly low number. On the other hand, there are funds supporting particularly women entrepreneurs and applying positive discrimination, which could be a great opportunity for a woman with a business idea.

Analytical careers guide

Analytics careers path

Strangely I never chose explicitly to work in data. I slowly moved towards it by discovering what key parts of the roles I was in  I really enjoyed. Naturally, my analytical traits drew me towards roles which required a lot of analysis, problem-solving and translating data into communications, plans and strategies.

Challenges

There’s an incredible movement right now to get a lot of women into tech. Right from a young age which is inspiring. However to make this a long-term success, the women currently in this field need to be advocates for ensuring that the world the next generation enter is fit to help them thrive and keep them in STEM careers. For me, I am excited to see there’s a growing movement towards flexible working, a good work-life blend and open conversations about the existing gender pay-gap and data bias that exists currently.

Analytics Jobs Opportunities

Absolutely not. For me personally, my degree is not in a STEM subject. I read History at the University of Birmingham and then moved into a more technical career path through experience, self-learning and post-graduate certifications. Honestly, there are many paths towards a successful career and honestly, no one path is the right one to take. A career is a successful one in my opinion if it makes you happy, keeps you fulfilled and promotes positive change in yourself and for those around you.

analytics careers

If you need specialist knowledge in a field and a degree is a requirement for your desired occupation, obviously it is clear that the most direct path to this would be to undertake the degree. However if not, apprenticeships, work experience and personal development are all other great ways to build the knowledge and skills needed to have a successful and fulfilling career.

Never be afraid to trust your own instincts, even if the choice seems scary, impossible or difficult at the time. Quite often, the biggest challenges lead to the greatest opportunities and rewards so never be afraid to push yourself to do something if it feels right. Also, remain true to yourself, learn from those who inspire you, and the true value of success is how happy you feel – not how much stuff or status you have.

Analytics careers path

I applied for several roles in accountancy but was rejected. I decided to start from scratch and think about what I enjoyed. Econometrics was my favourite subject at University, so I started exploring that route. I found an agency leveraging econometrics to inform marketing capital allocation and media planning decisions. I applied and got the job. Then 2 weeks later I moved to London to start my career in data and analytics.

Marketing Analytic Jobs

Challenges and Changes

  • Shift in working environments to being more flexible
  • Increasing parity of maternity and paternity leave, although more work needs to be done here.
  • Many successful people who chose not to graduate from University, for example, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Richard Branson… pursuing their passion… led to highly successful companies.

Analytics Opportunities

Definitely, gender is the key diversity group which affects data and analytics, with males outnumbering females 4 to 1. The disruption caused by women entrepreneurs would help to shake up this field… Bringing diversity at senior levels and by serving as role models for those considering to enter the industry… To encourage those to stay and grow their career in data and analytics.

Analytics advice

Let go of being perfect! I spent far too much time thinking, planning… Even worrying about the future, when what matters is really now… As things generally change that will affect your initial decisions and thoughts anyway. Don’t worry so much and go with the flow.

Innovation Lead example of an Innovation Career Path

On paper, my career journey looks quite erratic… But the theme running through all of my choices has been experimentation. I like to try new things that haven’t been done before. Whether that was literally experimenting in a laboratory. Or trialling different data sets to see which has the most impact.

Innovation Career Opportunities

Having more women, more people of colour, more people from different backgrounds, isn’t charity. Companies aren’t pushing diversity & inclusion initiatives just because it’s the right thing to do. They’re doing it because it makes good financial sense. I’m excited that this is a big focus for organisations everywhere. It will lead to lots more opportunities for a broader range of people. Plus, better products and services that reflect the consumers they serve.

Qualifications for Innovation Careers

Having on-the-job experience is incredibly valuable. I’m a huge proponent of schemes like apprenticeships. They give you the opportunity to work and study. There are definitely opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the field where I work; in fact, there are opportunities for women entrepreneurs in every field.

Challenges

I’m excited that the value that diversity (of all kinds) is being recognised as having a major impact on the bottom line for businesses. Having more women, more people of colour, more people from different backgrounds, isn’t charity; companies aren’t pushing diversity & inclusion initiatives just because it’s the right thing to do (although it certainly is), they’re doing it because it makes good financial sense. I’m excited that this is a big focus for organisations everywhere and think it will lead to lots more opportunities for a broader range of people, as well as better products and services that reflect the consumers they serve.

Most careers involve some form of project management, but what does a Project manager do?

What do Project manager jobs London involve?

A project manager initiates, plans and executes a project within the given time frame.

Project management includes initiating, planning and executing a project within the given time frame. Clearly, the bigger the project and the more people involved, the more complex this process will therefore become.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has furthermore gone as far as defining the project management cycle. The PMI breaks this process down into 5 phases:

  • initiation
  • planning
  • execution
  • performance monitoring
  • closure

Product manager jobs London

Project manager jobs. Project management cycle diagram

These phases, therefore, constitute the steps in completing a project. Each of these phases also requires different skills and attributes.

There are therefore various types of project managers, the most common of which are in:

  • Construction
  • Healthcare
  • Engineering
  • IT
  • Energy
  • Digital

Project Manager Jobs London

A Day in the Life of a Project Manager

There isn’t really a typical day in the life of a project manager. Tasks of the day will depend on where in the cycle any given project would be. Also how many projects a project manager has on the go.

Firstly, keeping your inbox in check might take up a lot of your average day. Secondly, attending meetings would be next in line.

Skills of a Project Manager

Clearly a project manager needs a variety of skills. They need to manage all the phases within the project management cycle.

These include:

  • Leadership
  • Negotiation
  • Planning
  • Communication – written & verbal
  • Organisation
  • Knowledge of subject matter
  • Risk Management
  • Scheduling
  • Time Management
  • Cost Control
  • Most importantly a Sense of Humour

Project Manager Qualifications

There are various routes to becoming a project manager. Most project managers have at least a Bachelors Degree in Business, Management or a related field. This is then followed up by professional accreditation and experience.

For an added edge, a Masters in Project Management or an MBA would also be beneficial. As a project manager, you also need specialised knowledge in the subject matter of your specific field. Therefore it is more common for a professional in their field to be appointed as a project manager than a general project manager to be appointed on a specialist project.

There are also various accreditations that are beneficial to a project manager’s credibility. The project management industry is highly competitive. Therefore the right accreditation or certification might be just what you need to get ahead.

Project managers’ accreditations and certifications include:

  • PMP or Project Management Professional, an internationally recognised certification by the PMI
  • CMI – Chartered Management Institute
  • IPMA Qualification
  • APM Qualification

Subsequently, belonging to a professional body like the Association for Project Management (AMP) or the Project Management Institute (PMI) also has its benefits

The AMP is currently the largest professional body for project management in Europe. The PMI also has a UK chapter.

There are various courses offered for those wanting to make a career change or upskill.

Day in the life of an Analyst

Finance Jobs Career Guidance

Thirdly, welcome to our finance jobs career guidance.

An Analyst analyses data used in a business. This data and the interpretation or analysis thereof is usually used for decision making. The role of an Analyst should however not be confused with that of a Data Scientist. The biggest difference between the two roles would be related to the kind of data used. The data analysed by a Business Intelligence involves processes and strategies to provide data analysis of business information. This then provided historical, present and predictive views of business operations. The BI analyst, therefore, uses more structured data, while a data scientist would work with both structured and unstructured data similar to data mining.

Within our current digital age, where so many systems, devices and gadgets are connected, there is more data available than ever before. The BI Analyst, therefore, has to find intelligence within this data. They also have to provide an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses based on this data. The role of a BI Analyst is however crucial in providing decision-makers within the business with solid data and an in-depth analysis thereof.

Finance Jobs London

As can be seen above, the tasks of a business intelligence analyst can be very varied. Analysis, problem solving and communication would probably be seen as the most used skills.

Day in the life of a financial analyst

  • The average day in the life of an analyst is quite structured and routine.
  • Analyze market strategies.
  • Analyze technology trends.
  • Collect business intelligence data from industry reports, public information, field reports, or purchased sources.
  • Communicate with customers, competitors, suppliers, professional organizations, or others to stay abreast of industry or business trends.
  • Generate standard or custom reports summarizing business, financial, or economic data for review by executives, managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify and analyze industry or geographic trends.
  • Maintain or update business intelligence tools, databases, dashboards, systems, or methods.
  • Maintain a library of documents, templates, or other reusable knowledge assets.
  • Manage the flow of business intelligence information to users.
  • Synthesize current business intelligence or trend data.

Analyst career skills and responsibilities

Since an Analyst predominantly works with data, the following skills are important.

Analyst Jobs London

  • Firstly, strong technical skills
  • Secondly, Analytical skills
  • Also, Customer-orientation
  • Communication skills
  • Good knowledge and the ability to work with specific software (like Sisense, Looker, Yellowfin, Tableau, SAP Crystal Reports, Domo, Microsoft Power BI, Qlik Sense, IBM Cognos Analytics, Google Analytics etc)
  • Understanding problem-solving, and
  • Lastly, an understanding of team management

Analyst career qualification requirements

A computer science BSc therefore, best prepares business intelligence analysts for their duties.

Although an MBA is often preferred. However, a person with the right experience and professional certifications will also be considered. Alternatively, a master’s degree in information technology or the industry you would like to enter would also be helpful.

Analyst Jobs London

Analyst career salary expectations

According to Glassdoor, the average base salary expectations for a Business Intelligence Analyst in the United Kingdom is  £35 000 per year as of 9 December 2019. This was however only based on 59 salaries. However, CW Jobs estimated the average salary for business intelligence jobs at £57 500 from a sample size of 216.

Salaries will, however, vary according to experience, seniority and location. A senior business intelligence analysts at Microsoft, however, reported to earn up to £75 000 per year on Glassdoor.

Finding employment as an analyst

Finally, once you start looking at job openings for business intelligence analysts, you will realise how many there are. Companies need people in this role for successful decision making. As a function of business administration, I can only see that more and more companies will see the value in this role.

Your career can be described as a series of jobs that are related to each other and which grow in complexity. Consequently, making educational and career choices are not once-off processes because both jobs and people evolve. For this reason, making these choices should not be seen as an all-or-nothing decision, but rather part of an evolving process. Therefore measuring your career success to a certain job or role would be pointless.

What does a mobile app developer do?

Our daily lives are dominated by mobile apps. You use them to check your mail, connect with your friends and colleagues, play and gather music, store information, the list goes on.  Looking at the Most Used Apps in the World in 2018 blog, I am sure you are familiar with most of these.

  • WhatsApp
  • Facebook
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Instagram
  • Snapchat
  • UC Browser
  • Uber
  • YouTube
  • SHAREit
  • Bitmoji
  • Google Search
  • GooglePlay
  • Google Maps
  • Gmail

  • Pinterest

A mobile app developer refers to anyone that can design, build/or maintain a mobile app. The two most coveted platforms for these would be IOS and Android, but there are various others. These include Mobile Windows, Blackberry, Symbian, SAP, Kony etc.

A mobile app developer would, therefore, most likely be someone (usually with software development background) who builds and/or maintains an app. Often entrepreneurs or businesses come up with ideas as to what they need and approach mobile app development companies to execute this. This is naturally where the mobile app developer come in. Another alternative would be for someone to come up with their own mobile app idea, build, maintain and market it themselves. This is where the entrepreneurial spirit is essential and would involve a lot of other skills not necessarily related to a mobile app developer.

Dev Ops Jobs

So what does a day in the life of a mobile app developer look like?

A mobile app developer would spend most of their day behind their computer. The ‘office environment’ will, however, have a great impact on exactly how they would be spending their days.

Dev Ops JobsSkills

It is important for a mobile app developer to have at least an understanding of the following:

  • Principles of secure, stable software design
  • An understanding of the software development process and lifecycle
  • An understanding of some development methodology (Agile, Scrum and so forth) and development platforms or environments
  • Knowledge of two or more programming languages, preferably in-demand ones such as SQL, Java, JavaScript, C# or C++, Python, PHP, Ruby on Rails, or iOS

Other important skills that would be greatly beneficial to a successful career as a mobile app developer

There is no better way for a developer to build skills and knowledge than by doing app development. Also, specialised training and boot camps are highly recommended to get up and running in this field.

DevOps JobsQualifications

There are a few ways to go about it. Each probably focused on a different outcome.

To become a mobile app developer you would need skills and knowledge in software development. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, management information systems or similar fields would be very beneficial. Most universities would have options within the field of software development and engineering.

With a degree, it would be easier to approach a company and work as a web app developer to gain access to the industry that way.

Some of the best universities for prospective mobile app developers:

Coding bootcamps can be great in kickstarting your career as a developer. These popped up in the past 10 years. They mainly originated because of the high demand for coders and insufficient supply.

These can last anything from a weekend to a few months, depending on the content and the program. At these camps, you are submitted to an intense hands-on program, teaching basic coding skills. These coding skills are however usually only in a specific field of coding while a computer science degree will give you a wider focus. For this reason, some employers will prefer to hire from certain bootcamps, while others would prefer hiring someone with a computer science degree.

Go at it on your own

However, coding bootcamps can be very pricey and you have to make sure you pick the field of coding most in demand.

You can go at this on your own with no qualifications, but you will definitely to make sure you are prepared for hard work. If you are more of a do-it-yourself, go-getter, you can learn the skills to become a mobile app developer on your own.

You can learn to code and buy the necessary tools. If you want to develop on Apple platforms, there are free tools and resources available for beginners. For only $99 per year, you can register as a developer and download the programming tools.

The Android software development kit is free to download. Guides to the different Android app kits can be found on the Google Android development site. You will, however, need to learn the programming language, Java.

You can also access the coursework for CS50’s Mobile App Development with React Native from Harvard University and other very useful resources from the Massive Open Online Courses link below.

Unfortunately, app stores are overflowing with apps of all shapes and sizes. Unlike 10 years ago, if you want to develop a successful app you will have to produce a well-designed one and make sure to hone your marketing skills.

Day in the Life of a Digital Marketing Manager

Welcome to our day in the life of a digital marketing manager

Also, welcome to our blog on having a successful social media influencer career.

Successful marketing jobs London

What is a social media influencer?

An influencer is a person who influences the buying choices other people make. They are usually able to do this either because they are in a position of authority, well-known and respected or merely based on their relationship to their audience and their popularity. Unfortunately in an image-conscious society, ruled by social media, these people don’t always have authority or knowledge, but are rather seen as ‘idols’.

Influencers are therefore people that have a big following (on social media specifically) and are able to influence the purchasing choices these people make. Obviously, there are many areas in which a person can be an influencer.

Fame as a result

Joe Suggs, for example, started off as a YouTuber and vlogger and currently has a YouTube following of 8.2 million subscribers as of December 2018. He, therefore, has a great reach as some of his YouTube videos get millions of views and many of those subscribers want to be just like Joe.

It is very difficult to define who influencers are or predict who will become an influencer as this is very dependent on the consumer market. It is however no longer a prerequisite to being a pop star, actor, model or celebrity, but can actually be the only claim to fame.

Kim Kardashian can probably be seen as one of the biggest if not the biggest influencer or our era. With a reported following of more than 200 million people across her social media platforms. She has definitely cashed in on her popularity.

However, you don’t have to be a celebrity to be an influencer and regular people are getting big followings on their social media platforms, enabling them to influence the purchase choices of large groups of people.

Marketing Jobs London

Wikipedia explains that influencer marketing, in a commercial context, comprises four main activities:

  • Identify influencers, rank them in order of importance.
  • Market to influencers, to increase awareness within the influencer community.
  • Marketing through influencers, using influencers to increase market awareness amongst target markets.
  • Market with influencers, turning influencers into advocates of the firm.

There are however many success stories to read about unlikely influencers on Instagram, YouTube etc creating an ’empire’ for themselves.

So what does a day in the life of an Influencer look like?

Making a living (and a very good one at that) from merely being popular is quite a new concept. Pop stars and other celebrities have been doing this as a part of their celebrity, however, more and more ‘regular’ people are very successful. Most of this is achieved by being active and engaging with your audience on social media. Posting often. Responding to comments. Starting conversations. Making silly/funny/endearing videos. Posting an ‘inside view’ in your life seems to be the approach many of these influencers use.

There is there no average day in the life of an influencer. It would be greatly dependent on the image the influencer wants to portray. What their niche is. Also, what their content strategy and approach is. Mostly, however, it is filled with videos, pictures, tags, comments and likes etc. However glamorous it may seem, there is a huge price to this lifestyle for many, as portrayed by Katherine Ormerod in her book and article in the Sunday Times.

Skills and responsibilities

To be an influencer you will have to be good at the following:

  • Communication skills and reasoning skills- engage people through communication, whether video or writing posts. Be able to think logically and analyse problems finding appropriate solutions for them.
  • Assertiveness and using authority – asserting your opinion so that your following is clear as to what you like and don’t like and convincing to follow you.
  • Interpersonal skills-building rapport and trust. Being friendly and engaging.
  • Interaction – building consensus and convincing people to help you influence others.

Qualifications

There are no specific qualifications for an influencer. Some experience or knowledge of Social Media platforms, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and content strategy would be very helpful. Forbes provides us with 10 tips on success as an Influencer.

Salary expectations

There is no specific salary expectation as this is such a varied field.

With claims of Kim Kardashian earning $500 000 for an Instagram post in 2015, it seems like the sky is the limit.
